By the end of COP26 in November 2021, 151 countries had submitted new climate plans to slash their emissions by 2030. For many, the solution to reducing their carbon footprint while transitioning to renewable energy involved the use of cleaner fossil fuels, namely natural gas as it produces fewer harmful emissions than any other fossil alternatives. In the United States, for example, 40% of the electricity was generated by natural gas in 2020—up roughly 3x from 2000. More locally, the CDPQ increased its stake in Quebec natural gas distributor Énergir twice over the past 6 months. This report serves as a comprehensive overview of the natural gas industry, its trends and developments, and its short and long-term outlook.
